Oh My Stars! (A Quilt-Along)

November 17, 2011

Welcome to my very first quilt-along!  I’m really excited to get going on this project and I hope you are, too!  But you’ll have to bare with me…I’ve never hosted one of these before and I’m a bit nervous about it, so please get in touch if ever there is something that is unclear or just plain wrong. :)

So.  First things first.  A blog button!!   (I mean, what’s a quilt-along without a blog button, right?!)

Oh My Stars! (A Quilt-Along)
<div align="center"><a href="https://thoughtandfound.wordpress.com/oh-my-stars/" title="Oh My Stars! (A Quilt-Along)"><img src="https://thoughtandfound.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/oh-my-stars-button.jpg" alt="Oh My Stars! (A Quilt-Along)" width="150" style="border:none;" /></a></div>

This button will link to a special quilt-along homepage that I’ve set up, and that I will update with links to each step in the project as they are unveiled.  Make sense?  You can also just bookmark the page for yourself (you can find it here), if you either don’t have a blog, or don’t like littering your own blog with other people’s buttons.  I totally understand.

Next, you’ll need some idea of the required yardage.  This is a tricky question to answer, since it all depends on how you interpret the pattern.  In my case, I’m making a super scrappy quilt, so all that really matters is how much background fabric I need, but that might not be the case for you.  The finished size for the quilt will be 68″ x 92″, which is a generous twin.  I like my quilts to be bed-sized, and with a generous drop, given the depth of mattresses these days.

"Oh My Stars!" with border

If my math is correct, then you (and I) will need 3.75 yards of background fabric and 3 yards of foreground fabric, provided that each star is sewn the most efficient way possible.  However, since the intention is for this to be a sampler of the many different ways to interpret a simple sawtooth star, I think a little rounding up would be prudent.  We’re gonna need some room to play, right?!  So I have 4.5 yards of Kona Snow (I’m sure I’ll find a use for whatever is left over…), and a pile of scraps from my vintage sheet collection.  So…I guess that’s the long-winded way to say that I recommend getting:

4 1/2 yards background fabric
16 FQs of various prints for the stars, or an overflowing scrap basket ;)

Now, if you don’t require quite such a large quilt (perhaps you have an older mattress, or you’re thinking of using it as an oversized couch quilt), then the easiest thing to do is to omit the 4″ borders.  This would give you a finished quilt 60″ x 84″, and use 1 yard less of the background fabric.

"Oh My Stars!" Quilt

Since you’ll need some time to get your fabric situation in order, and since next weekend is Thanksgiving south of the border, how about if we get started after that?  Does that make sense?  Also, since we’re headed into the holidays, and everyone has a ton of gift-related sewing on their tables at the moment, I think it likely suits everyone’s needs to work at a leisurely pace for now.  But feel free to correct me on that point if you’re itching to motor ahead.  :) And please leave me a comment to let me know if you’re joining in!  I know that it will likely be a small group, since I don’t have a ton of followers, but it’ll be helpful in gauging my audience’s needs.

OK! So I guess I’ll see you back here on the 29th or 30th!

Fantastic timing. I have just cleaned up my work space and have a couple of WIP boxes empty and was considering the option of looking for a new project and here I am :o) Looking forward to starting on this with you and yes a leisurley pace would be great with some xmas sewing still to do. Do you have a follow option on your blog? I’d hate to miss a post.

I LOVE this!!! I put your button on my blog. I think this will be a nice way to use up some of my VS collection. Although I have to admit I will probably do it after the first of the year! THANKS!!!

  5. November 18, 2011 9:18 AM

I’m in. This will be my first quilt-along and I appreciate your going slow at the start, given the time of year.

  6. November 18, 2011 9:57 AM

I need another project like I need ! Well, you know how that goes. But, this is really an eyecatching quilt and I don’t have a star quilt. I usually can’t keep up with these sew a-longs to save my life, but even so, count me in. Bernie

  7. November 18, 2011 10:39 AM

I’ve never made a big quilt before. This one’s so lovely I’m totally going to follow along!

  8. November 18, 2011 11:47 AM

Count me in! This is lovely and I can see a blue/yellow scrappy version emerging from my machine as we speak. Maybe. Or maybe a red/white one….or maybe….well, I guess we’ll all know soon.

Oh Sheila! This is the first QAL I’ve been really tempted to enter! It’s sooo beautiful! (Other offerings have been too, I’ve just been too busy to consider them.) I’ll definitely think about this one. The slow holiday pace makes it very tempting too! :)

Count me in, I love this design! And I’m the second member of your Flickr-quilt-along group! But I probably won’t be able to keep up, so I will do it at my own speed. Already thinking about my fabric choices. Hmmm, maybe a coal background?

I would love to join you on this, have to see about my time.

  14. November 19, 2011 6:24 AM

I just came across this and I simply cannot resist!! I adore stars and this is PERFECT. I am excited….hmmm what fabrics?

  15. November 19, 2011 6:27 AM

I’m definitely joining! I’m in love whith your design since I saw it in flickr. I have a blog but I’m new to it so it might take a day or two until I finally find out how I can add your button but I will…
Now the fun part, chossing the fabrics, I’ve decided I won’t buy new fabric for this quilt, I want to use part of my stash, I already have some Kona Ash yards so it must be something that matches… And I’m slow at sewing, don’t get discouraged if everyone finishes and I’m still at the beginning, it’s not your instructions/pattern, it’s me… :))

This is truly unfair. I had *JUST* made the statement to all of my quilting buddies that I was NOT NOT NOT going to start anything new because I *was committed* to quilting the pile of tops that are sitting here AND finishing up my stack of UFOs.

And then I saw your QAL. Oh gosh, what a pretty, pretty pattern! So simple, yet sooooo pretty! :-)

So maybe instead of working on finishing my UFOs in the evening, I’ll work on the Oh My Stars QAL. I’m sure the UFOs won’t mind, after all, they’re used to waiting. :-)

You should let the gal (she took over the blog recently so I forgot her name) that runs The Vintage Sheet blog know about the QAL. This is going to be a beautiful quilt done in vintage sheets.
