I just saw this photo in the photostream of Ingrid Jansen of wood & wool stool, and I was intruiged…

girl with the pearl earring

So I did a little research, and I discovered the art in the photo is the work of a company called IXXI. I can’t read the website (I think it’s in dutch…), but it looks like they offer a unique display system for your own personal photographs by blowing up the image and printing it on a grid of squares as large or as small as you’d like. I think that’s interesting, but what I LOVE is their reinterpretation of famous paintings by dutch masters.

The Milkmaid (Based on the painting by Johannes Vermeer)

Girl With a Pearl Earring (Based on the painting by Johannes Vermeer)

Self-Portrait (Based on the painting by Vincent van Gogh)

Years ago I did something similar with some family photographs. I was exploring the juxtaposition between traditional women’s handcrafts and contemporary digital production methods, and created a textile which could be generated using personal images to produce an abstract pattern. Blah, blah, blah…

Actually, one of the preliminary sketches from that project became the image in the header of this blog!

Anyway, seeing these images has reminded me of that previous work, and made me think that perhaps that pattern could be translated into a quilt top design. Hmm… Definitely something to think about…
